How to Choose Correct Shutter Mounting Hardware

  1. Terminology Shutter Pocket - The opening into which the shutters will close.
  2. Pintel - The male part of the hinge set that attaches to the house.
  3. Strap - The female part of the hinge set that attaches to the shutter.
  4. Siding Material - The siding material that used on the house i.e. brick, plank, stucco.
  5. Return Depth - The distance in inches, from the window sash to the outer edge of the structure.
  6. Pintel Offset - The distance in inches, between the plate that scres to the house and the pin that the strap sits on.
  7. Strap Offset - The distance in inches, from the pintel pin to the inner part of the shutter.
  8. Hinge Throw - The pintel offset plus the strap offset. The distance needed for the shutter to clear the structure when in the open position.

Questions that must be answered.

  1. What type of siding is on the house around the window? Example: Brick, Stucco, stone, plank, vinyl...
  2. What type of moulding (180 brick mould, 1 x 4 flat mould, etc.) is around the window or does the siding material butt up to the window with no trim board at all?
  3. What is the return depth in inches, from the outside edge of the trim board to the face of the sash itself?
  4. How deep is the pocket or frame the shutter will close into.
  5. Where will the pintel be placed?
