Exterior Paneled Shutters

Custom Options

The Exterior Paneled line of shutters manufactured by Southern Shutter can be customized to meet most specifications; available with up to five rail placements, the panel layout variations are endless. The even, two panel layout is our most popular. Often a small panel is used in three panel configurations, with a small top panel or small middle panel. Three equal sections is also a popular choice.

Curve Top designs available in standard quarter arch or our craftsmen can follow a template for irregular curves such as the eye brow, elliptical, or gothic arch.

Slant or Rake cut shutters are available to avoid obstructions, such as a roof line. Authentic functional shutters often hit some portion of a house, resulting in the shutter not laying flat in the open position. Some embrace this look, while others prefer to cut the shutter to avoid the obstruction. We embrace the look of function when a shutter hits a chimney
and doesn't lie flat, but it's a matter of opinion. Either way we can build the shutter to fit each situation.

Stain Grade components may be requested. This ensures no finger joints, but does not cover color matching or panel laminations.

Copper Caps are available for all shutter frames. They prevent rain from penetrating the top edge of the shutter. Used primarily for a decorative touch that only copper can accomplish as it ages. Copper Caps are shipped loose and should be applied after finishing with an exterior grade construction adhesive.

Rails and Stiles may be ordered in custom sizes; all moldings and shutter components are manufactured and shaped in house,

Rail Placements allow for unique designs. We prefer to line rails up with window lock rails and mullions, but there are no written rules when it comes to rail placements.

Trim to length is offered for customers desiring an exact length. It not required unless shutters will actually be closing. The look of function can be achieved with out exact sizing.

Built to width, all shutters may be ordered to the nearest 1/8" on width.

Build to exact length, although offered in one inch increments, paneled shutters may be built to exact length.

Rabbited or Ship-lapped is available on all shutters; used at the point where two shutters overlap.
Beaded Ship-Laps are also available, normally a 3/8 radius is employed to add a decorative detail as seen on historical buildings.

Boston style Horns are offered on all shutter panels. This detail is often seen in the New England area.

Decorative trim is offered in two profiles. The trim is inlaid with the panel, allowing for the strength of a pegged mortise and tenon, but conveying the beauty of cope and stick construction.

Combination Options may be used across all panel and louver shutter frame lines. Combining louver with panels gives the end user a truly endless selection of possible combinations. With panel variations, flat, v-groove, raised, etc. a customer can design a truly unique combination.

Cutouts and Carvings are offered in wide variety of designs. Custom designed options are welcome given our CNC capabilities.

Single side raised-standard default panel is flat on back and can be turned either way. We recommend the raised being visible in the open position.

Double side panels are sometimes used on functional shutters so the panel design is visible in both open and closed positions.

Flat panels are often used to achieve a shaker look. Combined with decorative trim, flat panels can complement structures while remaining understated.

V-Groove flat panels are availablefor those
wanting the look of v-groove with out the raised portion.

V-Groove raised panels combine the raised panel with the v-groove, resulting in a look that is often used to match or compliment an entry door that may have this popular option.

Custom Options

The exterior fixed louvered line of shutters manufactured by Southern Shutter can be customized to meet most specifications. They are available in three frame variations and a wide variety of louver profiles. This extensive array of product is unique to Southern Shutter.

With up to five rail placements, the louver frame layout variations are endless.Evenly divided two section layout is our most popular. Often a small section is used in three panel configurations to mimic the lock rails and transom rails of a window. Aligning the shutter rails with the elements of the window is preferred.

The Exterior Movable louvered line of shutters manufactured by Southern Shutter can be customized to meet most specifications. Available in a heavy duty 1 3/8" recessed stile & rail and three traditional louver profile widths, this exterior grade movable louver is unique to Southern Shutter.

Available in combinations with panels and up to five rail placements the design variations are endless. Evenly divided two section layout is our most popular. Exterior Board & Batten Shutters

Custom Options

Southern Shutter offers a unique construction approach to the Board & Batten shutter design. Customers may specify the number of boards. This enables the design to have wide or narrow vertical boards depending on the desired look.

Battens are set at 3" from the ends unless otherwise specified. Board & Battens over 65" in length require a third or center batten to prevent any warping or movement of boards.

The Board and Batten shutter is not offered with boards tight against one another. Others do this, but it is sure to cause issues down the road as each Board expands slightly. Many lesser imitations have been replaced through the years where expansion actually forced the board off the batten. Our assembly methods are constructed to give a lifetime of service.

Boards & Battens may be specified by approximate width or board count.

Batten Placements allow for unique designs.

Spacing. We use a standard space of ¼". It may be adjusted for those who prefer a tight gap or increased for wider gaps.

Built to width. All shutters may be ordered to the nearest 1/8" on width.

Build to exact length. Board & Batten shutters are built to exact length or may be trimmed at the top or bottom equally, to achieve exact length.

The Interior Movable louvered line of shutters, manufactured by Southern Shutter can be customized to meet most specifications.

Available in a 1-1/8" Recessed Stile & Rail with four traditional louver profile widths 1-7/8", 2-1/2 ", 3-1/2",
4-1/2"
Available in combinations with all interior panel variations, and up to five Cross Rail Placements the design variations are endless.

Slant or Rake cut shutters are available. Just provide a high and low side and we will put a rake to match your specs. This is often done in interior applications where plate glass windows follow the roof pitch.

Curve/Radius designs are available in standard quarter arch and half rounds or our craftsmen can follow a template for irregular curves such as the eye brow, elliptical, or gothic arch.

Sunburst and multi-panel Shutter Groups are custom crafted. Please have template or exact geometry. Never take for granted an opening is true or square, most of the time they are not. It is critical that a template be provided and all measurements confirmed.

Lever Handle Cutouts are available for all interior product lines. This is used primarily on movable louvers when mounted to a French Door with a lever handle. Customers may choose to replace lever handle with round or egg shaped knobs in lieu of the cut-out.

Build to width all interior shutters may be ordered in 1/8" increments at no additional charge.

Stain Grade components may be requested. This ensures no finger joints. However, it does not cover color matching, or panel laminations.

Paint Grade shutters come pre-primed and sanded.
